2008 - All about energy savings

Allan Rienstra, Editor
The Ultrawave Technology Report

One hundred dollars for a barrel of oil; natural gas prices soaring; while gold and other natural resources are all set to crash through record barriers in 2008 and who can really predict where these price points belong? As manufacturers we can be assured of one thing, spiking energy costs will impact everything we make and consume for the foreseeable future.

Energy efficiency can be our competitive advantage for both cost savings and greenhouse gas reductions. SDT will continue to do its part to help green the world by helping manufacturers around the world find energy efficient opportunities on the plant floor. Huge wins are available in your compressed air systems, your steam systems, and the lubrication of your rotating equipment.

Last year we introduced the SDT Compressed Air Leak Calculator, as simple Excel Tool designed to help you calculate the savings potential of a compressed air leak management program. This year we are releasing a similar tool for calculating energy waste from failed steam traps. These tools are complimentary downloads and we hope you will use them to make your factory a more profitable place and our planet a more green and livable space.

Congratulations graduates of our first French Language Level 1 Certification

The first Airborne Ultrasound Level 1 Certification in French was delivered last week in Montreal, QC, Canada. Teaching the course for the first time was Jean-Paul Emmanuele from France and the feedback from the participants was overwhelming.

SDT is proud to offer Level 1 Certification in English, Spanish, Chinese, and now French. Additional languages will be added in 2008 as we continue to teach ultrasound to a growing global community of ultrasound inspectors

Congratulations to our French Graduates!

Leak Detection Tip - Play the Bounce

Performing an ultrasonic compressed air leak scan in a noisy factory can be challenging. Air lines that are hidden behind production machinery adds to that challenge. Compressed air leaks produce a turbulent flow at the site of the leak which generates an ultrasonic signal. This signal can be detected over the loud competing noises in your factory allowing leak detection to proceed while the plant is in full operation.

Leaks that are hiding behind product machinery can bounce of hard surfaces such as concrete walls and sheet metal. Looking at the diagram, the turbulent flow of  the leak was first detected coming from the wall. Since walls don't typically make leak sounds the inspector followed the reflected angle and discovered the leak in an air line behind machinery.
