Comparing Ultrasound and Temperature When Monitoring Fan Bearings
Allan Rienstra, General Manager SDT North America

Allan Rienstra, Editor
The Ultrawave Technology Report

Our website and this newsletter serves as a great forum for our fellow ultrasound inspectors to bounce ideas and questions around and hopefully get some answers. SDT Training Programs helps builds a solid community of inspectors who turn to us when they have interesting ideas to share. We recently had a great question from the ultrasound inspection team at Temple Inland in Texas. The question was centered around using both temperature and ultrasound data to confirm bearing condition prior to and after lubrication. The responses, suggestions, and conclusions serve as pretty good reading, especially if you are responsible for acoustic lubrication using AVM technology at your plant. Here is the question from Temple:

I use both ultrasound and temperature measurements on grease filled pillow block bearings. The bearings are 3 15/16" SKF 2220 grease filled variable speed (1500-1800 rpm) split housing used on fans. I keep coming up with the same results for these fan bearings. That is, when the temperatures get very high; as much as 50ºF over ambient; my ultrasound readings become much lower. The average dBµV data for all these bearings is 45 dBµV, but for high temperature measurements that ultrasound number drops to 27 dBµV. That is 8 times quieter! This appears strange to me as I would have believed that higher temperature would mean higher ultrasound.

Keep Afloat by Saving Energy and Prolonging Asset Life Through Maintenance

Tom Murphy is a corporate trainer for SDT as well as a consultant and author. He recently provided a short white paper to the UK publication "Smart Energy Decisions".

Saving energy has become disjointed in many large businesses. There is money to spend on excessive energy use. But there is no money to spend on reducing that usage. Maximizing your productivity is not in the hands of the production department, it is in the hands of the maintenance department. They are expected to carry out the surveys, tap into their own labour to make repairs, and use their already stretched budget to buy replacement parts. But in the end maintenance will not be credited with the success or with the savings. So, it doesn't get done. >> Read the whole story
